Driving is a bit like marmite; you either love it or hate it. I find that people hate driving because it makes them nervous. So, I had a little think and came up with a few tips to help you become a more confident driver. Give them a read, and let me know what you think about them:
Drive As Often As Possible
Now, I know some of you have read that heading with a quizzical look on your face. Driving can be expensive, so how can you afford to drive as much as possible? Well, it’s true that the more you drive, the more you spend. But, I think it’s worth spending some extra money to help you improve as a driver. Driving, like anything, gets better with practice. The more you’re out behind the wheel, the more confident you get. You’ll learn your local roads well and understand how to deal with tricky junctions. Slowly but surely, you’ll gain confidence and feel at home behind a steering wheel. When you feel fully confident, you don’t have to spend as much time driving around as you used to!
Buy A Car That’s Comfortable To Drive
Driving confidence has a lot to do with the car you’re driving. If you have a big, heavy, vehicle, it can be intimidating to drive. You’ll feel nervous because of all the power you need to control. My advice is to buy a car that feels comfortable to drive. Take some for a test drive and get a feel for the vehicle. Buy something that feels effortless and doesn’t intimidate you.
Take A Pass Plus Course
When most people pass their driving test, they think that the lessons are over. You’re now free to hit the roads and drive around as you please. However, you can become a more confident driver if you take some time to go on a Pass Plus course. They’re designed to help new drivers learn more advanced skills and become more confident on the roads. You find that most driving instructors will offer you the chance to go on a Pass Plus course after you’ve passed your test. I recommend it because it helps you get to grips with things you don’t cover during your lessons, like motorway driving. If you want to improve your driving, then it’s well worth a shot.

Get An Automatic Car
This final piece of advice is a little bit of a cheat if you ask me. One way you can be a more confident driver is if you switch to an automatic car. Most people learn to drive a manual car because it means you can drive both types of transmission. However, stalling is always a worry and you have to think about changing gear. With an automatic car, you don’t have to worry about this. Driving is simple, and you’ll feel more confident!
Take my advice on board if you’re a nervous driver that needs some help. Trust me, you’ll feel more at home in your car, you’ll never want to stop driving!
