The first generation of Kia Picanto stood out as a really good city car. The second generation Kia Picanto 2011 has made everything even better. Our review is based on analysis of various car reviews published online for Kia Picanto and data available on Kia website. It now offers a very interesting up-market feel that comes to the table with a highly competitive price tag. The new Picanto version will be offered to you with a choice of 5 or 3 doors and this is the first time that a city car comes with something like this.
We also have a new look that is quite attractive. The front end is pretty similar to other Kia cars but the rear now has larger screen. Tail lights definitely add style points and on the whole the car is quite attractive. The wheelbase and the length are bigger and this basically means that we have a lot more space inside the car.
What is interesting is the fact that the engines are offering really good performance while driving through the town but they are also suitable for motorway travel. We need to take a closer look at the Kia Picanto Hatchback due to the fact that it is a really serious competitor on the market at the moment.
Kia Picanto Prices
The entry level is the 1.0 1 model, which costs just £7,795. This is a really affordable price tag. If you can afford to pay more you should know that the most expensive model is the 1.25 Halo Auto, which costs just £12,295
Power and Performance
The Kia Picanto hatchback offers you 2 engines to choose between. The 1.0 petrol unit comes with 68 bhp and the pulling power is of 95Nm. It is very good when talking about performance. It cannot be described as a sports car but it can compete with other models on the market. The engine is capable of reaching 62 mph in 13.1 seconds and this is just a little slower than the competition offered by Fiat 500. You can also opt for the more powerful 1.25 litre engine, which can get to 62 miles per hour in just 11 seconds. The performance is more than enough for city traffic and this engine is capable of a top speed of 106 miles per hour. Both models feature a manual gearbox with 5 speeds and the stronger one also offers a 4 speed automatic gearbox opportunity.
Now talking about handling, we need to say that there is a lot of improvement noticed from the past model. This is mainly due to the wheelbase, which is longer by 15 mm. It is a lot easier to control the car when cornering. We are faced with a proper handling even at higher speeds so this is something we need to take into account.
Interior and Exterior
We cannot talk about this without mentioning the long wheelbase first. This not only helped handling but it also offered more interior room. We now have a lot of boot space and the front cabin basically gains 36 mm of legroom. The rear seats are perfect for children and teenagers. Adults will most likely only be comfortable when faced with short trips. Comfort is really good though and you will love the fact that the wind noise will not be felt. The insulation is really good although we are going to hear a small whine. However, this will not be too disturbing.
Due to the fact that you will find this car being available as 3 or 5 doors, we can say that there is enough headroom and the overall length of the car is 60 mm longer. The present tailgate is wide enough but you will not have much carrying capacity. Kia Picanto only offers 200 litres.
Safety and Reliability
The new Kia Picanto has improved and now there are more things to look at. This basically translates in more security. The standard safety kit will include 6 airbags, stability control, hill-start assist and much more. A very interesting system will detect emergency breaking needs and pedestrian safety is improved.
Now referring to reliability we have to say that this is a really reliable and solid car. The improvements done will only make everything even better. When you buy the Kia Picanto you are going to receive an impressive 7 years warranty and this basically indicates that the car is really reliable.
eBest Cars Verdict
The truth is that the Kia Picanto Hatchback is a very interesting car and most of the versions offered are really well equipped. The 7 year warranty is impressive and the driving position is really comfortable. The only problem is that it will be a little jerky in traffic and there is some numb steering noticed. If you want to buy one, stay away from the entry level as you will want more power for sure. However, it is a perfect city car for people looking for economical ride. It is probably the greenest car with just 99g/km and 67.3mpg fuel economy, thus low VED (vehicle excise duty).
