Mercedes Benz M class ranks 5 out of 17 luxury mid size SUVs, which is quite reasonable. Most of the reviewers are happy with the performance and conformance. It comes with good spacious interior and latest technological amenities, but when you compare its price with other mid sized SUVs, it does not offer much value.
Mercedes M Class is one of the few luxury SUVs, which offers fuel efficient diesel model. And also the new 2010 gas electric hybrid model, which increases the fuel efficiency more, but you have to pay the premium for the increase.
The price range is $45,700 – $56,750, which is quite high as compare to the competitors. The base model price is around $45,700, but if you are going for other trims, the price will go up around $55,000 or more. The ML450 hybrid starts from $55,000 and it is considered one of the most expensive SUVs.
Due to the price factor it does not attract the reviewers, but you can expect high performance from Mercedes. The fuel economy is the trump card especially in diesel model. The base model do 16 mpg in city and 21 mpg on highway, however, hybrid and diesel fuel economy is not comparable to other SUVs. Superb fuel economy is the major consideration, as diesel model has fuel economy of 18 mpg in city and 25 mpg on highway and hybrid model has 21 in city and 24 on highway.
Reviewers are impressed with smooth driving of a new hybrid model. The ML450 has a unique natural feeling brake pedal. You will surely enjoy the brisk acceleration and smooth steering. If you are looking for a luxurious family SUV, then M class is the right choice for you. It is available in different trims V6 powered ML350, BlueTEC diesel powered ML350, ML450 hybrid and V8 ML550.

Acceleration & Power
The basic ML350 comes with 3.5 litre V6 engine, which makes 268 horsepower. The BlueTEC ML350 has 3.0 litre V6 turbo diesel engine, which makes 210 horsepower. ML450 is even more powerful, it comes with 3.6 litre V6 engine supplemented with electric motors, which makes 335 horsepower. The V8 model ML550 comes with 5.5 litre, which produces 382 horsepower. These M Class models come with seven speed automatic transmission.
The fuel economy is very good, but if you are buying the V8 model, then the fuel economy is quite low. M Class has smooth handling and solid feel, test drivers like the steering.
The new M Class is equipped with spacious and luxury front seats, however, few people didn’t like the rear seats. The new Command system is worth using, it controls the audio, video and navigation functions. The base model ML350 comes with long list of standard features including a leather steering wheel, power-adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, automatic dual climate control, remote keyless entry, new burl walnut trim, a six-disc CD changer, a power glass sunroof and a tilt and telescopic steering column. However, it still lacks few features like iPod interface and leather upholstery considering its price.
The cargo space is good considering mid sized SUVs; it provides 29.4 cubic feet and 72.4 with the rear seat folded down. If we consider other SUVs, the cargo space is not enough.
M Class receives few modifications and is more aerodynamic. The curves are more modern and stylish. However, most of the people didn’t like the exterior as compare to other mid size SUVs.
Safety & Reliability
M Class and its hybrid model receive 5 out 5 for rear, frontal and side crash tests. It also receives 4 star rollover score. These ratings are given by federal government safercar.gov.
The reliability rating is not much high as compare to other vehicles, but these ratings are based on average calculations. M Class comes with 4 years or 50,000 miles warranty, whichever achieved first. If you love Mercedes Benz as we do, then M Class is the best choice for you.
