Is there a better way to see America than by travelling via highway? When it comes to taking in the sights, sounds and culture of the USA, road trips can’t be beaten. However, choosing the right automobile is essential for a successful road trip. The car will become a ‘home away from home’ for the duration of the adventure. But which vehicles are the best choices for a memorable road trip?
Well, we’re not strictly talking coolest cars here. Nope. That would be way too easy, and littered with six-figure sports cars. Anyway, who would want to be cooped up in a tiny sports car for days on end? It just isn’t feasible to enjoy a road trip in a Porsche Carrera, a Lamborghini Diablo or a Ferrari Enzo. But don’t fret, as there are plenty of great choices available for all road trippers. When it comes to choosing a car for your road trip comfort and reliability are essential – if it happens to look awesome as well, that’s of course a bonus.
Lets get the obvious classics out the way first shall we. No post about American road trips would be complete wthout paying homage to Thelma & Louise and so the 1966 Thunderbird convertible has to make the list. These wonderful American classics are few and far between these days and if you break down on Route 66 you might be waiting a while for spare parts to arrive but if you’re looking for an authentic piece of American road trip history you can’t go wrong with the Thunderbird.
If you’re looking for a camper you can’t get much cooler than the 1973 Volkswagen Transporter made famous by the family of misfits US road trip in the film Little Miss Sunshine (2006).
Nothing says American icon like a 1959 Pink Cadillac convertible. These classic gas guzzlers might be more commonly used as wedding cars than tourers these days, probably due to the fact you’ll be lucky to squeeze 15mpg out of them but this is a once in a lifetime vehicle for a once in a lifetime road trip.
The first of our modern cool cars on the list is the Ford Flex. For road trips, what more could travellers ask for out of a vehicle? It’s roomy, chic and extremely comfortable for the driver and the passengers. Almost big enough to be comparable with a minivan, the Ford Flex comes with a sun-roof, an entertainment and navigation system, and even a mini-fridge. Now, that is cool!
The Mercedes Benz S63 AMG is the automobile of choice for those wanting luxury at its finest and both driver and passengers will feel at home during the trip in the s63. OK so a Merc is hardly an American classic but the reliable German engineering on this luxury beauty will get you through the long desert stretches in a breeze. The twin turbo V8 engine is only the beginning. All of the seats are able to recline, plus they include heating, cooling and massaging capabilities. Of course, the car is extremely expensive, but worth every dollar.
The Honda Odyssey is perfect for families going on any length of road trip. Why so? Well, just get a load of the features this large and beautifully practical family van boasts. Cooler box at the front, 16-inch display screen and entertainment system at the back, rear view camera and enough seating for eight. Even though it doesn’t have a sporty, eye-catching façade, the Honda Odyssey is certainly one of the most endearing and affordable cars for a long road trip.
V8’s have never sounded so good, and this is why the Dodge Challenger R/T Classic 2011 has to be listed as one of the coolest cars for your American road trip. This modern example of classic American muscle will own those highways and be the awe of everyone it passes. Okay, so it doesn’t usually come with a hi-tech entertainment system and it is only suitable for two passengers. But this matters little, as the Dodge Challenger is still as cool as they come!
Known as the ‘Grand Tourer’, the high-priced but elegant Bentley Mulsanne is arguably the coolest car on the American road. Blue tooth connection, 60 gigabyte hard drive, eight inch entertainment screen, and IPod/MP3 amenities are just some of the features Bentley has included in this vehicle. Of course, the car is worth more than a quarter million dollars, so not everyone can afford it! And you’ll need to factor in the cost of the chauffeur for the duration of your trip but still – roll out of the Nevada desert onto the Vegas strip in this motor and you’ll be the talk of Sin City!
Finally, the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited is a fantastic road trip vehicle for families and group ‘trippers’. Even though the mileage of this SUV-designed vehicle may not be the best on the road, its entertainment system is stunning. Including DVD, CD, IPod access and an inbuilt hard drive, not to mention wireless headphones, the Grand Cherokee has hit new heights in the modern SUV world.
