Home / Car News / Petrolheads: Here’s Why The Audi A3 Offers Such Great Tuning Potential

There’s no denying that a familiar sight on any road in UK and Europe is the Audi A3. It first went into production back in 1996 as an alternative to the Volkswagen Golf. The difference with the A3 is that it’s bigger and caters to a premium market.

The Audi A3 is available in many different flavours, ranging from three-door to sportback. If you’re a petrolhead, you might think the Audi S3 model is your best bet. But, did you know that the standard A3 models offer plenty of tuning potential?

Here are a few examples of what you can do to increase the performance and potential of an Audi A3:

Larger turbo and intercooler

It makes sense to tune one of the TSI models on offer from Inchcape Audi. The TSI engines provide plenty of tuning potential and are more cost-effective to tune as well.

Let’s assume that you’ve got an Audi A3 with a 2.0-litre 16-valve TSI power plant. As you may know, the “T” in TSI stands for “Turbocharged”. But, what you might not know is that you can replace the turbo and its intercooler.

Why? The simple reason is that a bigger turbo means you can get more air into the engine. And a bigger intercooler means you can cool a larger volume of air from the turbo. I recommend considering a hybrid turbo. After all; the last thing you want is too much turbo lag!

At the same time, make sure you upgrade to silicone hoses for your turbo and intercooler pipework. Not only are they more durable than the factory rubber pipes, but they also look nicer too. Samco offers an excellent selection of silicone hoses that you can use.

Free-flowing exhaust system

You won’t be able to use your standard exhaust system with an upgraded turbo. It makes sense to go for a custom-made, free-flowing unit. You should also opt for a custom stainless manifold as well.

That way, you’ll be able to achieve the best performance results from your efforts.

ECU remap

Once you’ve fitted a new turbo, intercooler and exhaust to your A3, you need to remap the ECU. If you don’t, you’ll find that your car’s power will be lower than what it was standard!

The ECU is, in effect, your car’s electronic brains. It needs to get reprogrammed so that it knows about your engine modifications. It helps to get the work done on a “rolling road” by an expert tuner. Companies like Turbo Technics can help you out.

Bigger brakes

The final and perhaps most important tuning change to make on your Audi A3 is the brakes. The standard efforts are fine for a stock engine setup. However, you are now running a more powerful setup. This means you need better stopping power!

The good news is that it’s easy to upgrade your brakes. You could upgrade to a braking setup from the Audi S3, for instance. Or you may wish to go down the aftermarket route. It matters not which of those options you select. What matters is that you aren’t driving around on the standard brake system!
