Home / Saab / Saab 9-5 Saloon Review, Saab 9-5 Pictures, Prices and Specifications

The brand new Saab 9-5 is a very interesting car that a lot of people have waited for. The earlier model was launched in 2005 so it was time for a new model to hit the market. Our review is based on analysis of various published car reviews for Saab 9-5 and data available on Saab website. We are in front of a new Saab that is styled better while also maintaining the Saab trademark for reliability. The improvements are easy to notice and a lot of extra technology put into it. The first thing that comes to mind is the head-up display. It is capable of projecting the speed of the car on the windscreen together with navigation directions and engine revs. That is an attractive feature never introduced before.

Potential buyers will love the adaptive headlights that offer better illumination as they change their intensity alone based on the condition of the weather. Saab has constantly struggled to be a real competitor for the main German brands and this one might help people change their opinion. Saab is struggling to make an impression in the market while BMW, Mercedes Benz and Audi already enjoying pre-earned success.

We can say that there is definitely a location in the premium sector for the Saab 9-5 model. It is stylish, roomy and does stand out when looking at it. You will most likely appreciate the diesel entry level model as it has low CO2 emissions and this brings in low taxes. The only problem is that you will have to bear with a little too much engine and wind noise according to today’s standards. There is also a little lack of support in the seats in the Vector models.

Saab 9-5 Prices

As expected, prices vary based on what model you are going to buy. The cheapest one is the Saloon 2.0 TiD Vector SE 4 DR, which costs £27,000 and the most expensive one is the Saab 9-5 Saloon 2.8 XWD Aero 4dr, which will make you pay £38,625. Prices may vary depending on which variant you choose. The best trim is 2.0 TTiD 190 Vector SE because performance is adequate and the running costs are lower.

Power and Performance

There are 3 main petrol choices that you can opt for and two models that are diesel engines. All will be turbo powered and this is a Saab trademark although the engines are definitely more economical when compared with past models. You can use over-boosting and this will increase pulling power. If you want to accelerate to 62 mph with the 1.6 litre engine you will be able to do so in 9.5 seconds while with the 2.0 litre engine it will take 7.9 seconds. If you need more, you can always opt for the 296bhp 2.8 VS engine, which allows you to reach the speed in 6.9 seconds. However, you have to let go the word economy for more performance oriented versions.

The diesel engines have 2 power outputs. The lower one offers a power of 158bhp while the higher end model offers 187bhp. You can also opt for a front wheel drive or an all-wheel drive. Petrol standard versions have an automatic gearbox while the others can also have manual gearboxes as standard. Handling is smooth and refined for the new model. You will be happy with smooth handling on the corners.

Interior and Exterior

Saab is well-known to offer a lot of comfort and this did not change with the Saab 9-5. The interior is highly attractive and really comfortable. All seats will offer proper lumbar support and the sporty models will give you extra side supports that aid a lot when you are cornering while driving.

We can say that this new model is larger and the passengers in the back do have more room for their legs. There is also a new U-Shaped track right in the present boot floor. It includes the telescopic cargo divider that we first saw in 9.5-estate. This offers flexible stowage space and you will surely love the standard umbrella holder and bag carrying hooks.

Safety & Reliability

It is great to see that Saab 9-5 Saloon managed to gain the maximum 5 star safety rating from Euro NCAP. There are many safety kits included like Active Heads Restraint, the great airbags present in the front and the sides and the Stability Control seatbelt pretensions. An extra LED brake light will light up in the back to warn people that there is heavy breaking.

When referring to reliability we have to say that Saab cars are usually reliable and this does not change here. Just like the earlier 9-5 mode, there are no major problems that have to be mentioned.

eBest Cars Verdict

The bottom line is that the Saab 9-5 Saloon is a very interesting car that appears as a workable solution in its market. It does look great and includes enough technology to make it really attractive. Green credentials are excellent most people will love the low CO2 emissions 139g/km with 2.0 liter Tid diesel and fuel economy of 53.3 mpg. However, people who are looking for a sports car with a lot of performance might want to look somewhere else. It is a perfect car and will stand out from the crowd. You will save good amount on fuel bills and road tax due to low emissions. Also, you are likely to get good auto insurance quote on your Saab 9-5.
