Summary:

VW has done it again to target the right market for car buyers with Golf Cabriolet. It is not as practical as the hatchback, but it fairly balanced with performance, luxury and economy.

Volkswagen Golf is an eye candy for everyone in UK and most of the female drivers love the VW Golf. Similarly, Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet will live up to the expectations of your driving needs. Our review is based on analysis of various car reviews published online and data available on Volkswagen UK website. It is a fun to drive car and most of the models are economical to run. You can easily accommodate four persons inside the cabriolet and the roof isn’t cranky to handle.

The body bends a bit on bad roads, conciliating comfort, and you can hear the wind noise on motorway speeds. Wind noise can only be a distraction when there is fast wind blowing. Boot is reasonable, but the opening is small. Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet may not be as desirable as the hatchback, even though it is desirable, posh, and well designed. With starting price of just £21,325, it has good demand and has high resale value. It is certainly cannot match with high-end cabriolets like Jaguar F-Type, or even Audi A5 Cabriolet.

Power & Performance

There is a long list of engines/models that you can choose depending on your desire for commuting. You can select the turbocharged 1.2 litre engine that produces 103bhp, there are two 1.4 litre engines that produces 120bhp and if you are not satisfied, there are 158bhp turbocharged engine and two 2.0 litre with 208bhp and 261bhp for GT and R. However, with powerful engines you have to let go the fuel economy that is why we like the low end 1.4 litre versions. It has blend of performance, economy and luxury. There are two diesel engines 1.6 litre with 103bhp and 2.0 with 138bhp, are a good choice for long mileage drivers.

Car reviewers aren’t impressed with driving the car with roof down because it increases bumps and shudders through your body. However, we don’t feel anything because of normal motorway speeds. Handling isn’t impressive as the hatchback, but it is sufficient to feel you secure and comfortable. You will love GTI because of its power output. It offers smooth ride with roof down and it increases when the roof is up.

Interior & Exterior

Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet has fabric roof instead of the metal one and it is quite elegant. There is no road and suspension noise when the roof is up. However, you will feel buffeting with roof down and windows up.

Golf Cabriolet interior is lifted straight, which looks classy and durable. Dashboard is also appealing with high quality plastics and smartly designed. It has received high ratings in JD Power and Associates customer satisfaction survey. Dashboard is easy to use, thanks to the big and labelled controls. You can adjust the seats and steering wheel according to your height providing comfort for tall drivers as well.

It is a comfortable four seat cabriolet that can easily accommodate tall passengers on board. There is plenty of boot space and you can increase the boot space up to 250 litres by folding the back seats. The roof can be operated at top speed of 19mph and it takes just 9.5 second to fold up and down. Golf Cabriolet is loaded with plenty latest equipment like DAB Radio, Bluetooth and fully electric roof. Higher end version adds more accessories and features, but you have to spend extra.

Safety & Reliability

Its interior is different than other Golfs and it feels more classy and durable. It also receives high ratings in JD Power and Associates survey and there are no reliability issues in the past. There is a long list of safety features in VW Golf Cabriolet like twin front and side airbags, driver knee airbag, stability control system and there are rollover bars that pop out if car is going to turn over. It receives the highest five out five rating in Euro NCAP crash ratings. You will also get security system like deadlocks and an alarm.

eBest Cars Verdict

There is nothing to complain about VW Golf Cabriolet because of balance of economy, luxury and performance. It is obvious for every car that you have to pay extra for real driving taste. Similarly, GTI and R versions offer good performance by letting go the economy. VW has kept the CO2 emissions to minimum ranging between 117-190 g/km and taxes will be normal up to £250.

VW has done it again to target the right market for car buyers with Golf Cabriolet. It is not as practical as the hatchback, but it fairly balanced with performance, luxury and economy.
